Wedding flowers on a budget
When I first launched Floral Jems I wrote a blog called Flowers on a budget. It has been my most popular post to date which just goes to show that spiralling costs is a huge concern for couples planning their wedding day.
There are so many elements to consider, from the venue, to the dress, the cake, the decorations, music and of course the flowers. It's very easy to carried away with the lavish arrangements seen on Instagram and Pinterest and it can be difficult to understand what is affordable and realistic for you. Fear not though, there are plenty of options to help you avoid having to sell those kidneys and keep on track with your budget, that still look professional and beautiful. You just need a little imagination and to keep an open mind...
1. Use a small, local, independent florist (ahem)
A shameless plug for myself but using an independent designer could potentially save you a pretty penny. We tend to work from our homes or studios and don't have the overheads that some of the bigger companies have, like expensive rent and staff costs. Be careful though if it's too cheap it could be too good to be true. There are lots of different florists out there with different styles, so shop round to find the right fit for you.
2. Be prepared to use cheaper and seasonal flowers
If you decide you want a deluxe array of premium roses or expensive peonies be prepared to foot a hefty bill. You could mix things up by having a few of the more expensive flowers as your focal flowers and some cheaper ones mixed in so you still get the luxury look but it'll stop costs rocketing. Carnations, avalanche roses and the use of lots of luscious foliage can be a great relief for the wallet but can still be classy and beautiful. Check what will be in season on your wedding day with your florist. They will be able to advise you of what will work with your budget.
3. Wrist corsages or single flower posies for bridesmaids
Asking your beloved friends to be your bridesmaids is a super exciting moment but it can be one of the easiest ways to blow a budget. It's not uncommon for a bride to have 4, 5, 6 or even more bridesmaids and flower girls so a great way to save some wedge would be to have wrist corsages, a single flower stem or a 1 type of flower posy. The more varieties of flowers you have in your wedding the more costs can rise. Gyp can be a great idea for bridesmaids as it's inexpensive and also makes the bride stand out with her more vibrant or varied bouquet.
4. Foliage
Foliage runners simply placed down the centre of your tables or little jars of fairy lights with greenery placed around the base are both amazing ways to save money. Add some candles or fairy lights and you have a beautiful, cosy wedding breakfast. You could just use some soft Italian ruscus for super inexpensiveness or add a touch of lovely grey eucalyptus for a bit of extra texture and a fuller look. Both options will have your bank account giving you a high five!
5. Bud vases and jam jars
Tried and tested but the ever popular jam jar or bud vase with just a few stems of flowers can look simply gorgeous and be a great way to save those pennies and the perfect option for a relaxed and pretty look. You could also use mirrors or log slices to create a bit more of a statement whilst saving on large expensive centrepieces. Your florist is bound to have a variety of different shapes and sizes to suit your budget.
